Russia and US Resume Talks on Normalizing Relations

Moscow (dpa) — Russia and the United States are to resume talks in Istanbul on Thursday on normalizing their diplomatic relations after a period of tension, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Tuesday, according to a report by the Interfax news agency.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has named the new ambassador to Washington, Alexander Darchiev, to lead the Russian delegation, while Sonata Coulter will lead the US delegation.

Both sides described the first round of talks in Istanbul on February 27 as useful. At the meeting, the US accepted Darchiev’s appointment

Years of tense relations led to the restriction of the embassies’ work in the respective capitals, with many diplomats being thrown out.

US President Donald Trump has pushed for improved relations since his inauguration in January.
